Five Steps to Make Your Home Green and Eco-friendly

OmniShield Home Pest ControlAt OmniShield Pest Control, Clean and Green is our motto. We want our business to be viewed as a great global citizen. We want your family to be healthy and safe. If you would like to learn ways you can make your home green and earth-friendly read our tips below for easy ways to make a big difference.

1. Recycle.

It might sound redundant, but many people still don’t recycle, and many don’t realize they can recycle more than just cans and paper. The average person creates four pounds of garbage every day and according to the National Institutes of Health, the U.S. generates 200 million tons of waste per year. If we all contribute to recycling, we can make a big difference. (For a complete list, read What can I recycle? from Waste Management.)

2. Adjust the thermostat.

Did you know that almost half of a home’s energy is used by heating and cooling the home. Combat this challenge by ensuring you have an energy efficient system but also by adjusting the temperature. Simply adjusting just one to two degrees can make a tremendous difference.

3. Save our trees by using less paper.

While paper is recycleable, it can sometimes be made with harmful chemicals. Most paper products are bleached with chlorine. The bleaching process can create harmful byproducts, which over time will build up in our air, water and soil. 4. Stop indoor air pollution.

The number one way to beat indoor air pollution is to ban smoking from your home. Second hand smoke kills 49,000 people every year in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control. Another safety precaution to consider is to buy a Carbon Monoxide detector from your local hardware store, and install it in your home. Carbon Monoxide is an odorless, gas and exposure to it can be deadly.

5. Use green appliances.

Upgrade your appliances to the most efficient possible and within your budget. Make sure you are using these appliances efficiently, such as waiting until a full load of laundry before washing and cleaning the lint filter in the dryer after every use. Other easy changes include waiting until you have a full dishwasher before cleaning dishes and unplugging appliances when they are not in use.
